Hello Design Friends!
Last month we talked about the importance of learning your design personality and why you should know your type before doing any redecorating or designing in your home. It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing what everyone else is doing when it comes to design, but if it’s not the right fit you, you could end up with a whole lot of stuff that doesn’t bring you joy. And that’s not what I want for you and your home. I want your home design and decor’ to be the perfect fit for you!
I discussed the difference between Design Style and Design Personality which is vital to moving forward with your projects. So if you missed last months issue, here’s the link. Part One of Discovering Your Design Personality
Discovering your personality type is vital to creating a space that fits the way you live and what specific things will make your home a perfect place for you. It’s also important to know your family’s personality traits as well so everyone is happy with the space when it’s finished. Blending styles can be tricky when you have different personality types and that’s where a designer can really help to make sure everyone relates to at least one element of design in the room.
In the next few blogs I’m going to go through these types and help you determine what your primary personality type is. From there I will combine each personality type with key design elements and give you a list of specific things you will want in your home. Things that fit your design personality!
So here are the four personality types that we are going to study. They are Popular, Peaceful, Powerful, Perfect.
Today I’m going to describe our next personality type.. The Peaceful Personality
The Peaceful Personality
Your Key Element is COMFORT. This means your decision making revolves around the question, “Is this comfortable?”
You’re wired to be an introvert by nature. You like to have a peaceful environment that is filled with soft surroundings. You also like things quiet and stress free and tend to avoid conflict at all cost. Because you don’t like change, it really important to find items you LOVE as you may be living with the same decor’ for awhile.
When choosing colors you’re likely to feel most comfortable with softer tones and very low contrasting colors. You simply must TOUCH your fabrics to see if they are soft and if they will be comfortable to sit on. Your friends and family love to come to visit because your place is relaxed and easy going, like you!
There are also weaknesses of your personality. Generally you often struggle with decision making for fear of making the wrong choice. You’ve gone through some episodes of buyers remorse and now that can keep you from purchasing ANYTHING. You constantly question your purchases after you’ve bought them and probably ask others for their opinion, seeking their approval.
What this means for your design in your home:
- Choose muted neutral colors for your walls and furniture. Your personality is by nature subtle and classic. Softer warm tones bring you a sense of peace and quiet. Casual fabrics help you relax and enjoy life.
- Choose timeless fixtures. You have a very stable, consistent personality so reflect that in your design. Rather than going crazy with the latest trends choose timeless fixtures like warm wood floors and brick walls that never go out of style.
- Have at least one item in your main living area that you absolutely love to touch. This could be a simple furry throw on your couch or maybe a soft woven rug that your toes like to dig into. Having something soft to curl up in will sooth you if you’ve had a stressful day.
- Make sure your furniture fits you properly. Because comfort is your key word, it is super important that your furniture fit your body. If you’re on the shorter side, choose a chair that allows you to put your feet on the floor comfortably. If you’re tall, pick out a couch that has extensions on the foot rest when you recline. No one likes their feet hanging over the edge, right? As your designer I look at all these elements when creating your custom furniture.
- Allow yourself time for decision making (but not too much time). You don’t like pushy sales people. If you have to deal with one your stress levels skyrocket and you may even walk away from something you really liked rather than being pushed into buying. (Or you may buy something you don’t like just to get rid of the salesperson). Instead, I encourage you to find a designer who understands that you need a little time to think about your choices. You work best after having some quiet time to sort through your options and make a decision without feeling pressured. Beware of taking too long though….at some point you do need to make a decision, and a good designer will help nudge you forward and walk beside you in the decision process. My advise for my peaceful clients to set a deadline to make your decision and stick to it.
How a designer can help you:
- Decision Making. We’ll help guide you through the process one step at a time and keep you moving forward so you don’t get stuck in fear.
- Handle the details. This is vital for you because too many details can paralyze you and cause a lot of stress. Just knowing that someone is on your side, handling all the details gives you comfort.
- Choose the right fit. Getting it right the first time is hopefully what your designer does best. Sure things can happen and changes made, but with a designer at least someone has your back and together you can get the right fit for your needs.
- Allows you to work with just one person. When you work with a designer, you get to work with just them when putting your design together. They will be your advocate when dealing with purchasing and contracting if needed. You can relax and let them deal with the crazy sales people right?
I hope you have enjoyed learning a little bit about the “Peaceful” personality type. Next time we will take a look at the Powerful personality type and see just what makes them tick!
