Mixing Old and New Design Styles

I’d really like to keep my grandmothers buffet in the new design.

A recent client who was redecorating her living and dinning room had this beautiful family heirloom that she wanted to use in the new design.

I said, “You can absolutely incorporate some of your older treasured pieces in your new design! I believe mixing and matching old and new adds character and interest into any space.”

Here’s what we did:

The first thing I added was a tall white mirror with a curved top to match the arched door frame next to it. By matching the white woodwork instead of the dark buffet, the mirror becomes the stunning focal point. Plus is reflects the light back from the patio doors on the opposite side of the room.

Next I created a layered look using a favorite scripture and inspirational message on a contemporary style frame.

Adding in some taller pieces like the lamp and candle sticks connect them to the mirror for a layered look. I made sure the decor on top of the buffet included some darker wood elements such as the candle sticks to connect the wood from the buffet into the design.

The ‘skinny’ lamp is a perfect fit for a night time ambient light. The metal tray with wood and ceramic balls add interest to the buffet. The fabric is actually a valance that the client had been using as a runner. It was still the perfect fit so we kept it.

If you would like some help getting this look for your home I’d love to connect with you and bring together new and old!

Happy Designing!
