Let’s Discover Your Design Personality

“I want lots of brick and iron and I want it quick.”  One of my clients recently said this to me and I knew right away what her design personality was. A powerful one. If you’ve been following me the past few months, we’ve been talking about the importance of learning your design personality and why you should know your type before doing any redecorating or designing in your home. It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing what everyone else is doing when it comes to design, but if it’s not the right fit you, you could end up with a whole lot of stuff that doesn’t bring you joy. And that’s not what I want for you and your home. I want your home design and decor’ to be the perfect fit for you!

Discovering your personality type is vital to creating a space that fits the way you live and what specific things will make your home a perfect place for you. It’s also important to know your family’s personality traits as well so everyone is happy with the space when it’s finished. Blending styles can be tricky when you have different  personality types and that’s where a designer can really help to make sure everyone relates to at least one element of design in the room. So here are the four personality types that we are going to study. They are Popular, Peaceful, Powerful, Perfect. Today I’m going to describe our next personality type.. The Powerful Personality The Powerful Personality Your Key Element is purpose. This means your decision making revolves around the question, “What is my part in this?” You’re wired to be an extrovert by nature. You have a commanding presence with powerful leadership skills. You are the most productive of all the personality types and work with tremendous focus and determination to get things done. And get things done swiftly, no messing around. Procrastination drives you crazy and indecisiveness is not in your vocabulary. Because of your powerful energy you are a good motivator of others and often a great visionary! When choosing colors you’re likely to feel most comfortable with rich tones with lots of texture. But you can love neutrals too as long as they ave lots of texture and character. You pick things mostly for their purpose first; asking what is the function and how can you best put it to good use. You like things to be solid and strong, from your furniture to your design look. You also have a strong sense of adventure, so embrace that in your design, allow yourself to add in some unique artwork or creative decor’. Another key element that appeals to you is asymmetry. Rustic design appeals to you because it’s usually random and not perfectly symmetrical. There are also weaknesses of your personality. If not careful, you can come off as overpowering and demanding. When you were a child your boldness and outspokenness probably lead to being told to sit down and be quiet many many times. Your decision making while decisive, can also be done in haste without enough thought placed in the process.  

• First, look at how your space needs to function. With your highly focused personality everything needs to serve a purpose. Your designer will ask, “How will this space be used?” Think carefully about this because how a room functions is key to empowering you in the space. If it doesn’t serve the correct purpose you will not like it and probably not use it. Because of your quick nature and “get it done” drive be sure to lay out your rooms for optimum efficiency.

• Choose solid furniture with a nature feel.  No dainty settees for you. You love furniture that has substance and weight. Blend that with your love of nature and you can pick some really rich earthy pieces. Feel free to go a little crazy and pick some natural wood coffee tables or a dining room table with wrought iron legs. Your practical nature loves to keep things simple and comfortable so don’t go overboard with adding in too many items in your design.

• Keep it random.  Asymmetry speaks to your heart. You generally don’t like things to be too perfectly placed so incorporating angles and embracing imbalance appeals to your random and industrious nature. Trending right now are hanging multiple lights and varying heights so bravely add those in your design.

• Add Brick.  There’s something about the look of brick that you love. Preferably the rough, old world brick. That will give you the look and feel you’re looking for.

• Put in lots and lots of texture. While you might not go for the bright colors and patterns that the type one, Popular personality likes, you make up for it with your love of texture. To be empowered in your space, choose things like woven blinds, sisal rugs, and diverse fabrics or leathers on your sofa’s. Throw in textured pillows and you will love your home every time you walk in it.

• Slow down and enjoy the process. Last month we talked about the Peaceful personality taking too much time to make a decision; well you need to actually stop and not rush into your decision making. Your impatience to get the project done may get in the way of managing all the necessary details. Slow down and enjoy the design process. Take the time to get all those wonderful details in place so the finished look is spectacular.

• Decision Making. We’ll help and guide you methodically through all the process’ so that everything is covered without rushing into a quick decision which may be costly in the long run.

• Keep the project moving. A good designer can help keep the project on task and on schedule. It’s no secret that remodeling needs time, but with a designer you have someone who stays on top of the details for you, freeing you to live your purpose where needed.

• Optimize your visionary skills. Your designer will love your desire to think out of the box and will help you create something as unique as you are. Give yourself permission to break tradition and use a space for something other than what is expected!

• Get it right the first time. As your interior designer, it’s my job to listen carefully to how you want the space to function and then lay out a specific plan that fits you and your family.
